John Ray Clemmons Announces Candidacy for Metro Council District 18
John Ray Clemmons today submitted the signatures required to be on the ballot on March 25th in the special election for Metro Council District 18.

“I will listen to the people of the 18th District and I will represent their views and values on the Metro Council,” Clemmons said. “I intend to be a voice for progressive policies that improve our schools, protect our quality of life and protect our environment.”

Clemmons is a native of Middle Tennessee and former Political Director of the Tennessee Democratic Party. He has a long record of political involvement and public service including work as an intern on the U.S. Senate Committee for Energy and Natural Resources, a member of the staff of former Congressman Bob Clement where he focused on transportation, small business and environmental issues. While at Columbia University in New York, Clemmons worked as a research assistant for George Stephanopoulos as the former Clinton aid wrote a book about his years in the Clinton White House.

Clemmons is a graduate of Columbia University with an undergraduate degree in history. He put himself through law school at the University of Memphis in two and a half years, promptly passed the bar and has been practicing law in Nashville since.

“I have seen the positive impact that forward-thinking government policies can have on the quality of life of Tennesseans and I’ve seen the damage that can come from ineffective and timid governing policies,” Clemmons said. “I believe in the power of government to make life better for families. I will be accessible and responsive to the people and small business owners in the 18th Council District.”

Clemmons and his wife, Tamara, live on Belmont Boulevard.
