‘English Only’ Amendment PDF Print E-mail
"In furtherance of my overall campaign to be an OPEN and ACCESSIBLE member of the Metro Council, I feel that it is important to have a page solely devoted to my positions on important issues facing the 18th District and our city.  To be truly “open,” I feel that it is imperative that I clearly state my opinion on important issues rather than use vague political jargon so that you know where I stand."

-John Ray Clemmons

I am flatly opposed to the so-called ‘English Only’ amendment, and I hope that the people of Nashville will defeat it at the polls.  This is bad public policy pure and simple.

I believe people of good conscience should stand against this amendment to the Metro Charter.  I believe the so-called ‘English-Only’ amendment will be bad for my community, bad for our schools, bad for our economy and give Nashville an undeserved black eye nationally and internationally.

I have personally contributed funds to help defeat the ‘English Only’ amendment, and I am actively campaigning against the amendment as I campaign for the Metro Council.  As I go door-to-door on my campaign’s behalf, I am speaking out against the English Only charter amendment as well as a second proposed amendment to the Metro Charter that would make it ridiculously easy to change the Metro Charter via referendum.

Nashville is a place where the voice of the people is heard through a large and diverse Metro Council. We do not need a series of expensive public referenda on divisive issues driven by a small and vocal minority.

I believe anyone who is serious about providing progressive leadership to our community should stand in opposition to these charter amendments, and I ask that my opponents join me in publicly stating their positions on this issue.  I believe silence on this issue is, in and of itself, a failure of leadership.
